![]() So, TL DR: If you worked in journalism, you'd be worried too if a rich dude bankrolled a lawsuit he had nothing to do with because he was pissed at your previous reporting. This is an actual 1st Amendment issue, not the "muh freeze peaches" shit you see when someone shuts down a controversial subreddit. It's worrying about the long view of American journalism. Especially since so much news is based around rich people doing stuff (Business people, celebrities, athletes and politicians are a part of SO MUCH of the news). ![]() Many journalistic outfits, Wired included, are worried about this, because true journalism (again, in theory) operates in an unbiased, uninfluenced sphere protected by the 1st Amendment (Speech and press, specifically) worrying about what rich person to not piss off so that you don't get put out of business is a strike against that. He is literally just bankrolling this to put Gawker out of business, or at least to hurt them very badly. Most importantly, and this is the big part, is the fact that Thiel has nothing to do with Hulk's sextape. Gawker, like many new media/blog sources, is newer and a bit more independent and thus has less financial backing to survive a huge lawsuit like this. Almost no one, period, thinks that was a moral victory for them. Almost all of them will indeed admit that Gawker was in the wrong about posting the Hulkster's sextape. You'll see a lot of media sites support Gawker about this whole thing.
